Abstract

Workers in the agricultural sector have the highest rates of accidents and occupational illnesses due to the health, work, economic, social, educational and geographic conditions in which they work. This represents a barrier to access to a more dignified and equitable quality of life.
Objective: strengthen institutional and community health capacities in a rural area of Bogotá.
Materials and methods: Qualitative study with a participatory action research approach. In the first phase, a participatory rural diagnosis was carried out, based on 12 semi-structured interviews and two discussion groups. IIn the second phase, based on participatory research, actions were carried out to strengthen institutional and community capacities, an intervention plan was
developed, and a famous health education process was created.
Results: In the diagnosis phase, three categories were identified: «peace and health as interdependent rights», «community health capacities», and «institutional capacities in health from the perspective of the community». The following problems reported by the community were prioritized and intervened: lack of water purification, limited sovereignty and food security in the territory, inadequate classification of waste and contamination and limited knowledge on the part of the farmers about their safety and health at work.
Conclusions: participatory action research contributes to strengthening dispersed rural workers' institutional and community health capacities through active participation and community empowerment with the support of institutions.
